Who Has the Right to Speak for Judaism?
What does it actually mean to be Jewish—and who has the authority to speak in the name of Judaism?
In this video, I argue that Jewish identity can include ancestry and halakhic status, but that being Jewish by birth does not automatically make someone a representative of the Jewish religion.
I also examine the modern tendency to blur Judaism, Jewish ethnicity, Zionism, and the policies of the State of Israel into one identity. Whatever your political position, those categories are not identical, and confusing them can cause the actions of secular political movements or governments to be attributed to Judaism and to religious Jews who may strongly disagree with them.
The central question is simple: Should people who do not believe in or practice Judaism be able to redefine Judaism or speak on behalf of the religion?
