Did Kabbalah Change Jewish Identity? The Rambam Says Otherwise
Did later Kabbalistic thought change the way many Jews understand Jewish identity? In this Short, I present my understanding of the Rambam’s position: that halachic Jewish status and one’s covenantal standing before God are not necessarily identical. Drawing on the Torah, the Talmud, and Maimonides, I argue that the classical view distinguishes between ignorance and deliberate rebellion, and that this distinction has often been overlooked in modern discussions.
